T610 Our Review
By Luiscamino (photos by Wildnomad)

The well deserved T68i substitute

You can read this model's overview, description, key features and specifications in T610's MAIN PAGE

Apart from the main features, some factors of every mobile phone can only be seen by using it, having it. The main impression the T610 gives is that it's high quality tecnhologic and design product, meant for being a long time companion. If only it had a couple of memory Mbytes more...

Key factors:
Same size than the T68i, but more compact
Incredibly well built and quality finish
Stable and reliable, no hangs
Ready for hard work: GPRS, Bluetooth, synchronization, lasting battery...
Ready for entertainment: User friendly camera and imaging features, JAVA and Mophun games, great advanced music composer...

1. High resolution colour screen: Size is 128 x 160 pixels and colour depth is 16 bits (65.536 colours). It would have been another "high-res colour screen" if it hadn't got such impressive graphics. The background image -based imaging are a real pleasure to the eyes.

2. Earpiece/Speaker: The T610 doesn't have integrated loudspeaker, but at least high quality and volume for the 32-tone polyphonic ringtones.

3. Infrared port: As in the P800, it armonizes with the rest of the design. In this case it is almost invisible since the case is all black.

4. On/off button: The phone starts up and turns off surprisingly fast, way faster than the T68i (even when it comes to load the Contacts list). See photo above (2. Infrared port).

5. Internet shortcut button: It always leads you to the integrated Internet Browser: sadly there's no way to customize the function of this button.

6. Joystick/LED: A nice touch: The charge LED is under the joystick. It is always red. The joystick is the same as the T300/T310 one.

7. Keyboard: Numeric keys are a little bit smaller than T68i but almost same touch. Navigational keys represent the first soft-key based interface in a Sony Ericsson phone, making it easier to use while improving speed. The "back" key is also a good shot in order to make the navigation as intuitive as possible. All the keyboard is illuminated in bright whitish blue.

8. CommuniCam integrated camera: It has a maximum resolution of 352 x 288 pixels and the quality of the final image is quite better than the average mobile phone camera. The image refresh rate when taking a photo it is very very fast (almost no lag), and the viewfinder is fullscreen. The lens are protected with a plastic.

9. Camera shortcut button: Just one click to activate the camera, and another click to take the picture. You only have to "wait" a mere one second to let the camera be ready.

10. Volume keys: Their texture is different from the camera button on top so you can distinguish them with your fingertips when you're on a call. They also serve for scrolling up and down in menus. See photo above (9. Camera shortcut button).

11. External antenna connector/Mirror: Here you can attach either the traditional antenna connector rubber cover or an original tiny mirror for camera self portraits (both pieces are included in the box).

12. Hand strap hole: In the photo showing the T610 without the battery (see 13. Battery cover) you can see the hook for the hand strap.

13. Battery cover: Like the rest of the lower part of T610's case, it's made from aluminium and feels very solid. The standard battery underneath is a Lithium-Polymer 770mAh. You can see how the T610 uses a new SIM card fixing system.

Interesting FAQs and other important issues

Yes, user memory is 2 Mbytes. You might have seen in other places that T610 internal memory is 4 Mbytes. That is "total" memory, including the firmware, the contacts memory, other read-only memory and the dynamic memory. The dynamic memory is the important one, the one you can actually use for storing MMSs, images, themes, ringtones, games and applications. And it's 2 Mbyte (well, actually it's 1918 Kbytes; see next parragraph).

There are many predefined items that CAN be deleted, especially ringtones and images. However, there are some items that are obviously essential for the operation of the phone and can't be deleted: The default theme ("Classic"), five sounds for default alerts and some MMS templates. All these only take 130kb of the dynamic memory.

Unlike old Ericssons and Sony Ericsson T68i, pressing the side volume keys in the status screen doesn't show the remaining battery time in minutes or percentage, just the current Profile, date and owner's phone number.

Menu speed has been improved. Navigation is much faster than T68i but still not "real time" fast, since the phone has to deal with the complex themes all the time. SMS writing with T9 is also faster than other Sony Ericssons, but still not as fast as some Nokias. Sony Ericsson asset in T9 writing is ease of use.

In status screen, the right soft key leads you to a useful menu with commonly used options. Thus for example, keylock is easily activated and deactivated by pressing "right" key and then "*" key

Like all Sony Ericssons, pressing and holding "left" (joystick left) in the status screen opens the first option of the custom shortcuts menu. Also, pressing and holding "right" (joystick right) opens the Call/Find contact screen.

These are the available fields for each contact: Name, Home number, Work number, Mobile phone number, Fax number, Other, Email, Title and Company. All synchronize with Outlook or similar software. As you can see, no Adress field is available. The number of contacts the T610 can store is 510.

The clock screen saver is back again in T610 and still can't be disabled. When you stop using the phone, the phone will display your chosen screensaver (if you have enabled the custom screensaver) for some seconds; and then it will display the clock. The light will turn off in some seconds and the clock, although still there, will be almost invisible.

Imaging. You can do quite a lot of things with images

"My pictures" shows a list of sored images in thumbnails.

You can draw on any picture, choosing between a great set of tools: Pen, Line, Ellipse, Rectangle and Text.

When you select an image, the display size is quite big, although not fullscreen.

Pressing "More" you select the tools and its properties, zoom the image, add effects and even pick colours from the image!

The picture options menu can be accesible either from the thumnails list or from the main picture view (See image on the right to see all the options).

Some of the available effects.

The Send command lets you send the image via all possible methods.

An example of image after applying the Negative effect.

These are all the direct actions you can do with a picture. The "Rotate" option is one of the most useful. "Edit" leads you to another set of options.

Themes. It's mobile skinning!

Classic - Status screen

Magma Glow - Status screen

Deep Ocean - Status screen

Blue Vision, a theme downloadable via WAP from the phone's "More themes" menu.

Just like in Windows XP, you have to wait a couple of seconds after changing theme.

Not only the images of the themes enhance the interface experience. Many elements (like these option icons) have a "computer" feeling that eases navigation by intuition.

There's a program for creating your own themes in your computer. It's "surprisingly" called "T610 Themes Creator" and it's available in the software section.

The integrated camera. Possibly the fastest and easiest to use mobile phone camera

The viewfinder is activated immediately whenever you press the external camera button. It's fullscreen and the image refresh rate is great. Another press on the camera button and you have the photo.

These are the options you can enable while taking photos. This means you can apply effects directly to the viewfinder.

And these are the available effects

Once you've taken the shot, you will see the taken photo and you will be able to chose between three options: Send (via MMS), Save or Discard.

Messaging. SMS, MMS and Email, plus we can now change alert tones!

When you receive an SMS or MMS, you get the sender's name in the notification alert...

...but if you asigned a photo to that contact, his/her photo appears instead :) It's like the old Photocall: PhotoSMS.

This is it, we can customize the SMS/MMS alert tone.

"Create new SMS" screen. At last a non-boring screen for writing SMS.

"New MMS" screen. You can add content to the MMS with few clicks.

Bluetooth remote browsing. A very interesting feature...

When you select an active Bluetooth device, you'll have this "Browse" option that will lead you to that device's internal folders and files structure!

Once there you will be able to "get" ringtones, images or any other supported file!

Bluetooth devices list. As expected, it differentiates between phones, PDAs and other devices.

JAVA and Mophun games.

Predefined games are "Minigolf", "Five Stones" and "Deep Abyss". Honey Cave 2 and other games can be downloaded via WAP from the "New games" option.

Mophun games for T300/T310 are being adapted to T610. The difference is firstly the screen size and secondly the colors. Mophun games support up to 256 colors. The point is that developers can actually "choose" those 256 colors, and thus make them look great in T610's 65.000 colour screen.

T610's Minigolf can be played by two players via Bluetooth or infrared. By the way, T300/T310 Mophun games CAN be installed in T610, but they will look this small.

Deep Abyss.

During JAVA application loading process, this screen is shown.

When running any JAVA application or game, a small "Java" icon appears on top of the screen.
