Sony Ericsson unveiled today yesterday (sorry guys, still without proper internet connection) what we’ve been calling P970/P980: a smaller, slightly watered down version of the P990 smarphone. But don’t get it wrong, it’s still a pretty interesting device. You saw how small and thin it was in the spy shots comparing a prototype case to a W800 (at 15mm, it’s actually the thinnest 3G/GSM triband phone seen to date), and many of you don’t really care about cameras at all, just as many businessmen who just aren’t allowed to use cameraphones at work. You read it right, there’s no camera in the M600 (not even one for videocall); the M sure doesn’t stand for Multimedia (altough it plays video at 30fps and music in MP3/AAC, ACC+, E-AAC+ and m4a formats), and the space between the screen and the smart Qwerty keyboard isn’t going to feature one of those Quickshare stickers (share what?); but with a 2.6″ 240×320 pixel 262k color touchscreen, 80mb internal memory, Memory Stick Micro M2 slot (64mb card included) and Bluetooth with A2D Profile (when are these guys making stereo bluetooth headphones?) in such a sleek form factor, we aren’t complaining. And since it runs on the same Symbian 9.1 OS/UIQ 3 interface as the P990, it also features all kinds of smartphone goodies: RSS reader, Opera 8 HTML web browser, Word, Excel and PowerPoint editors, VPN client, McAffee virus protection and firewall, Push email compatible with Blackberry, Exchange and a bunch of other applications; all of which the P990 will also feature when it hits the shelves in two or three weeks (after all, many of us still need the camera and the WiFi the M600 lacks ). The baby smartphone will go out on Q2 this year for an unknown-but-probably-lower-than-P990 price. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
