K750i Preview

Posted by Luis Camino on Mar 2, 2005 in K750/D750|Reviews

K750 laying side Sony Ericsson expects to repeat the success of the T610 with the new K750i by packing all imaginable features inside. However one of the keys of the T610 revolution was its unique design, and with today’s tough competition in the feature department, K750i may fail in offering a distinctive style. This moring at the SE press conference there were mixed emotions about the new flagships’ aesthetics (both the K750 and the W800). They can be loved or hated, but I’d say the K750i can even go unnoticed. Subjectiveness aside, it’s such a great and featured device it will outstand in the market for a very long time. And of course we still have to see the silver color version.

K750 autofocus
And shipping around June with a pricetag below 500€, it sounds like a hit to me. The K750i’s greatest feature must be the camera. It would be fair to say that although it’s 2 megapixel, the sensor is a traditional CMOS, always of lower quality than the CCD sensor of the 1.3 megapixel S700. Exhaustive comparison shots should be made in order to announce a winner, since —do not forget this— more megapixels doesn’t necesarily mean more quality. The autofocus is the real star of this new camera (also used in the W800). In the same manner as a good digital camera, the shutter button has two positions, two levels of pressure, being the first K750 autofocusone for focusing what you want to shoot —ensuring perfect focus even with near objects down to 6 or 7 centimeters—, and the second to actually take the photo. I must say it does feel like a good digital camera: the focusing is really fast and gets fixed on the distance set, no matter if you move and point the viewfinder to another object before taking the photo.

K750 early firmware The refresh rate in the viewfinder is also really fast, as it is the automatic exposure compensation (heaps faster than the S700). In fact, everything is fast in this phone. Considering it is a prototype runing a tweaked V800 firmware (just like the W800 and K600 current prototypes), it is a proof that SE has finally achieved a decent level of action and menu speed.

If you’re starting to enjoy this Sony Ericsson at this point, the oh no! change in the charge/sync cable/accesory connectors system shouldn’t worry you. K750 connectorsYeah, you’ll have to change your car holder, your oldfashioned wired handsfree won’t work and all your synchronization cable/stations and chargers will go directly to the bin but… aren’t fast-as-USB2.0 data transfers worth all that? or the new xenon light real-flash MXE-60? Evolution comes at a price. One that I certainly am eager to pay.

Talking about flash lights, the K750i and W800i come with a double-led flashlight. That plainly doubles the light beamed to the object being photographed, but I do not think it is the key factor for good light in dark conditions. K750 flashlight For example, the V800 with a six-led flash takes much darker photos than the single-led S700 in the same low light environments. Lenses, optics, it’s all about that, but I didn’t have the chance to test this issue in the new phones.

The screen is a novelty in the brand’s range. Shared by “the new three” (K750, W800 and K600), this one has a very high contrast, all the 262.000 colors you need, and a physical size a bit larger than the K700 but much smaller than the V/Z800. Perhaps 176×220 pixels feel a bit short…; even with a phisically small screen the resolution (pixels per inch) won’t even come close to the one of the S700 —still the best screen by Sony Ericsson ever—. Visibility under direct sunlight is good as you can see in the picture below. The interface hasn’t changed at all from the v800. Only that they have new themes, although I didn’t like their overall darkness. The way the icon menu appears is not an animation from the center as in the v800; instead the icons quickly arrange themselves from top to bottom. Not bad but not impressive.

K750 screen The last thing to comment is the innovative battery cover. Sony Ericsson has introduced previously unseen battery cover systems in most of his new models (K600, K750/W800, J300) and this one is maybe the best one. Why? Because it’s so small. It covers just about 20% of the back of the phone and the battery is removed by pressing inwards and then sliding it out of the phone’s guts, memory card style. This of course improves the overall rigidity of the device and reduces ugly noises.

K750 battery cover I wish I had had more time to play with each phone today, but it’s also nice to get just the general impression… and again I want to stress that while the looks of the K750i have a long winding road ahead to grow on me, the feature pack is so overwhelming no SE fan would resist desiring one.
